Rape of a Nation takes a humanizing look at Iran’s struggles for national identity and discover its stunning parallels with the myth of Persephone, reoccurring themes of abduction, rape, and the cycle of death and rebirth. Featuring found footage captured by cell phones of the protesters, Rape of a Nation emphasizes firsthand accounts of the movement and the power of social media networks to influence national identity. In Conjunction with puppet animation of Shirin Mozaffari, the film weaves the world of myth into the Iranian political history and suggests the possibility that Iran’s national identity will echo Persephone’s fate.
